Bill Gates is launching his "Gates Notes" Web site on Wednesday, featuring his thoughts, travels and more.

SEATTLE--Now you have a chance to compare notes with Bill Gates.

The Microsoft chairman is launching a Web site on Wednesday designed to to share his thoughts on everything from his foundation work to musings on other topics including energy and the environment.

Dubbed "Gates Notes," the site is launching with postings from Gates himself, and in the works are plans to allow for more discussion on the topics he raises.

"Bill has been spending time learning a lot from thought leaders in their fields," Gates' staff said in a note. "He has been taking notes and sending emails, and the site is a collection of the conversations, books, articles, trips and people who have inspired and informed Bill."

In its initial form, the site features articles on education reform, lessons from the swine flu pandemic, and the need for help in Haiti. There's also a podcast series with Gates speaking on climate change and the challenges of developing friendlier alternatives to today's energy sources. (Along with being available for download from the Gates Notes site, the podcasts will be on both iTunes and the Zune Marketplace, I'm told).

Although energy and climate issues are not something the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has directly focused on, it is an area of keen interest for Gates and will be the focus of his talk at next month's TED conference.

Gates Notes also features a section on Gates' travels, where he narrates some of the video footage taken on trips, such as last year's visit to India. Another section includes notes on some of the books Gates is reading.

Another section, dubbed "conversations," is designed to include both interviews with Gates as well as excerpts from some of the long e-mail exchanges he has with various thinkers as well as question-and-answer sessions with students from around the world.

The launch of Gates Notes comes a day after Gates joined Twitter, where he quickly racked up hundreds of thousands of followers.

Although Gates Notes draws on work from the foundation, as well as from Gates' work at Microsoft and at Nathan Myhrvold's Intellectual Ventures, the Web site is a project of his personal staff.

Microsoft to release patch for IE hole on Thursday

Microsoft said on Wednesday that it will release on Thursday a patch to fix the latest hole in Internet Explorer that was used in the China-based attack on Google and for which an exploit has been released on the Internet since last week.

The company plans to release the patch as close to 10 a.m. PST on Thursday as possible and host a public Webcast at 1 p.m. PST, according to the security advisory.

Microsoft continues to see limited attacks and has only seen evidence of successful attacks against Internet Explorer 6, according to Jerry Bryant, senior security program manager at Microsoft.

"This is a standard cumulative update, accelerated from our regularly scheduled February release, for Internet Explorer with an aggregate severity rating of Critical," he said in a statement.

"It addresses the vulnerability related to recent attacks against Google and a small subset of corporations, as well as several other vulnerabilities. Once applied, customers are protected against the known attacks that have been widely publicized," Bryant said. "We recommend that customers install the update as soon as it is available. For customers using automatic updates, this update will automatically be applied once it is released."

Vulnerable software is IE 6 on Microsoft Windows 2000 and IE 6, 7, and 8 on supported editions of Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft said.

Microsoft also updated its security advisory on the vulnerability to include technical details to address additional products that may be affected by this vulnerability and to provide guidance related to reports of proof of concept code that bypasses the Data Encryption Protection that can mitigate against attacks.

For an attack to be accomplished, an attacker would have to lure an IE user to a Web site hosting malware that was written to exploit the hole in the browser. This could be done by using social engineering and including a link to the malicious site in an e-mail that looks like it is coming from someone familiar or contains important information. Once a computer is infected, an attacker could take complete control of it.

Microsoft had announced on Tuesday that it would release the out-of-band patch before the next Patch Tuesday in February.

Meanwhile, McAfee announced on Wednesday the availability of a free tool that anyone can use to detect and remove any malware related to "Operation Aurora," the name they have given to the attacks on Google and other companies based on what they believe attackers dubbed it. The "Aurora Stinger" tool from McAfee also includes a link to the cloud-based McAfee Global Threat Intelligence, McAfee Chief Technology Officer George Kurtz said in a blog post. "This means it will also pick up on newly discovered variants in real time without requiring an update to the signature files that come with the tool," he said.

MQM richest party, PPP poorest

56 registered political parties of the country including PPP, PML-N, MQM, ANP and PML-Q have submitted the details of their assets and bank accounts with the Election Commission under the Article 13 of the Political Parties Orders 2002.

All the submitted details of the assets have been verified by the Chartered Accountants.
According to reports received by the Election Commission MQM is the richest party of the country whose moveable, immovable and cash assets are near Rs 90 million. The party income for year 2008-09 stands around at Rs 77.04 million while expenditures were Rs 37.67 million.

The ruling party PPP surprisingly has no property in the country and the cash assets are merely RS 435,000.

During year 2009 only Rs 600 were spent from party accounts.

PML-N moveable, immoveable and cash assets stand at more that Rs 70.6 million and the income of party was Rs 5.80 million while expenditures were RS 4.10 million.

PML-Q immoveable assets for 2009 were Rs 54.62 million and cash assets Rs 1.34 million.

During the last year the party income was Rs 11.88 million while expenditures were Rs 12.11 million.

PML- and PML-N also not only have declared PML buildings in Lahore and Islamabad as their property but also have shown the expenditures on it in their declarations.

Awami National Party has also declared its moveable and immovable property for 2009 at Rs 27 million and RS 1.8 million account balance.

The party income for last year was RS 3 million and expenditures 0.50 million. Jamaat-e-Islami declared its moveable and immoveable property of more than Rs 1.5 million. During last year JI income was at more than RS 4 million while expenditures were more than RS 5 million.

PML Functional income last year was Rs 1.4 million and expenditures more that Rs 1.3 million.

The moveable and immovable assets of the party are more that RS 0.6 million. Awami Muslim League has no bank balance while Tehrik-e-Istaqlal Bank Balance is mere Rs 5000.

SYDNEY: Pakistan took full control of the second Test match here at the Sydney Cricket Ground when their bowlers grabbed eight wickets of Australia’s second innings on Tuesday.

Australia were reeling at 286 for eight when the play ended on the third day of the five-day match.

Michael Hussey, who came at number four is still at the crease with a fighting 73. The other batsman is tail-ender Peter Siddle (10 not out).

Pakistan need only two wickets to go for chasing an expected easy target to beat Australia at their own ground.

Leg-spinner Danish Kaneria captured four wickets for 117 runs while seamer Umar Gul claimed three for 62. Fast bowler Mohammad Asif took one wicket while Mohammad Sami could not get any wicket.

Earlier, openers Shane Watson and Phill Hughes provided a solid start of 105 after Pakistan were all out for 333 with an impressive lead of 206 runs.

Australia were 86 for no loss at lunch but lost three wickets in the second session.

Nawaz vows to foil plot against democracy

KARACHI: Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif said Tuesday that his party would foil every plot aimed at destabilizing democracy in the country.

Addressing a news conference after chairing the meeting of the party’s Organizing Committee here, Nawaz Sharif said there was no conspiracy against President Asif Ali Zardari, but added the PML-N would resist any such move even before the government.

He, however, cautioned that undemocratic attitude of the rulers could pose threat to the democracy. The former premier said those talking about the conspiracy against democracy are in the government. They should take actions against such elements, said Nawaz.

The former premier urged President Zardari to explain whom he was facing threat.

“We need to learn a lesson from the past, he said, adding survival of both PML-N and PPP is in the best interest of democracy.”

To a question, he clarified that the repeal of 17th Amendment was not meant for becoming prime minister for the third time.

THE BASICS

In transit, bits are represented by nothing more than brief electronic pulses that zip through the various components on a computer’s motherboard. Bits can, however, have a physical presence too.

On a CD, for example, bits are represented as minuscule pits etched onto the disc’s surface. When these are ‘read’ by a CD-Rom drive’s laser beam, they’re converted into the electrical pulses that a computer can understand.

Obviously, a solitary bit isn’t particularly useful but, when strung together, they can represent numbers using a binary system (or base two – decimal is base 10).

Everything in a computer is represented as a binary number and everything a computer does is done by performing calculations on binary numbers. Thankfully, you don’t need to know anything about bits and binary to use a computer, but an understanding of bigger collections of bits is useful.

Byte
Eight bits make a byte and a byte is the smallest collection of bits that a computer can work with. If you know your binary, you’ll know that a byte can represent any decimal number from 0 to 255.

Bytes are also used to represent letters, numbers and other symbols using an arcane system known as ASCII so that when you type the letter A on your keyboard, the computer records it as the ASCII code 65 – represented in binary as 01000001 – which is one byte of data.

Kilobyte (Kb)
Even though it contains eight bits, a byte still isn’t much use alone and it’s only when bytes are grouped together that a computer can do something meaningful with them.

Perhaps the smallest practical measurement of computer data storage is the kilobyte, which consists of 1,024 bytes. (Note that in the wider world of measurements, the ‘kilo’ prefix equates to 1,000 but as computers work in binary, 1,024 is a more workable multiple.)

Computeractive always abbreviates kilobyte as Kb but you might see it elsewhere as KB and even referred to verbally as simply ‘k’.

Since single characters on a computer are represented as bytes, it follows that a kilobyte can represent 1,000 characters (including spaces – a computer doesn’t know something is there unless it keeps a record of it).

That is about the same number of characters as there are in this definition of ‘kilobyte’. This whole feature contains around 20,000 characters, which equates to about 20Kb.

Megabyte (Mb)
Moving up the scale and we encounter the megabyte – Mb, as we always call it but you may see it written as MB or spoken as simply ‘meg’. The megabyte follows the binary-multiple convention explained above, signifying not 1,000 but 1,024 kilobytes.

There’s often confusion about the megabyte, thanks to a number of hardware manufacturers who insist on reverting to small print in order to redefine the abbreviation ‘Mb’ as meaning ‘a million bytes’.

Companies that intentionally exploit this ambiguity effectively short-change their customers, as a megabyte is technically 1,048,576 bytes, not 1,000,000.

Regardless of this marketing ploy, every computer in the world works – and will continue to work – its sums in binary, so your PC will always tot up megabytes as 1,024 kilobytes. Computer memory is generally measured in megabytes, with 512Mb being a typical complement on new PCs.

Gigabyte (Gb)
Time was when hard drive storage capacities were measured in tens and later hundreds of megabytes. Technology moved on though, and modern hard disk capacities are beyond the point where megabytes are a practical measure, hence the arrival of gigabyte.

The gigabyte (or Gb as we put it, GB as some put it and ‘gig’ as just about everyone calls it) is a binary multiple of a megabyte – 1,024 of them to be precise. If you’ve detected the trend, you can probably work out the size of a terabyte (Tb), the measurement next up on the scale from gigabyte.

Sadly, the abbreviated form of the measurement (Gb/GB) suffers from the same ambiguity described previously, inheriting the ‘millions of bytes’ definition from manufacturers who like to mislead and amplifying storage potential discrepancies further.

A manufacturer who insists on calling a gigabyte a thousand megabytes is selling you short, since its 80Gb hard disk – 80,000Mb – is really only a 76Gb model.

Kilobit (Kbit)
As if to complicate matters further, when it comes measuring the quantity (and/or speed) of data transfer between PCs (and/or components) binary conventions are thrown right out of the window.

The ‘kilo’ in kilobit (abbreviated to Kbit in Computeractive) actually does mean 1,000 and not 1,024. In other words, despite all we’ve told you so far, you must simply accept that a kilobit is 1,000 bits.

A modem, for instance, offers a theoretical maximum download speed of 56Kbit/s, meaning up to 56 kilobytes (56,000 bits) of data come down the phone line each second. Get out your calculator and you should be able to work out that this is equivalent to 6.9Kb/s (kilobytes a second).

Megabit (Mbit)
When kilobit isn’t an ample measure for the quantity of data at hand, the megabit steps in. Again, forget convention: a megabit really is a million bits and it’s more often used to describe fast data transfer speeds, such as those used by hard disks or networks.

The cabling used in a typical office network, for example, can send and receive up to 100Mbit (the abbreviation for megabit) of data each second.

It’s all too easy too confuse megabit with megabyte (and similarly, kilobit with kilobyte) but they differ by an order of magnitude.

If you’ve been following the figures carefully, you’ll be able to calculate that one megabit (1Mbit) is the same as 122Kb and that one megabyte (1Mb) is 8,388,608 bits or 8.4Mbits.

SPEEDS

Hertz (Hz)
Hz is short for Hertz and that’s the surname of one Heinrich Rudolf, the German physicist after whom the metric unit for measuring radio and electrical frequencies is named.

One hertz (1Hz) means one cycle or oscillation (for a radio wave) a second but computer users will recognise the term from their monitors. CRT monitors work by refreshing their screen image many times a second and this ‘refresh rate’ is measured in Hz.

A monitor described as offering an 85Hz refresh rate, for example, redraws its image 85 times each second, making it appear flicker-free to most eyes.

Megahertz (MHz)
1Hz is one cycle a second, 1MHz is one million cycles a second. It’s impossible to picture something happening one million times a second but, when it comes to computer processors, 1MHz is nothing.

A processor works to the tick of an internal clock and typically performs one calculation on every tick. How often the clock ticks (the ‘clock speed’) determines the speed of the computer and that speed is measured in megahertz.

The first PCs had a clock speed of 4.77MHz, 4.77 million clock ticks per second. The latest Pentium 4 PC has a clock speed of 3.2GHz (see below for a full explanation of GHz), or 3,200,000 ticks per second. That’s very fast.

One final note about clock speeds and MHz. Clock speed is exactly that: the speed of a processor’s clock and it isn’t always a good guide to how ‘fast’ a processor is.

All processors perform complex calculations by carrying out several simple sums in succession. Some processors are more efficient at this than others, which means they take fewer clock ticks to do the same sum as a less efficient processor.

The upshot is that it’s possible for one processor to be quicker at doing something than another, despite having a lower clock speed – less MHz or GHz, in other words.

Gigahertz (GHz)
In the computer world, the abbreviation for gigahertz (GHz) has two meanings. When used in relation to computer processors, it equates to 1,000MHz (see above).

As all new processors run at clock speeds much higher than would be practical to describe in MHz, GHz is used instead, ‘3.2GHz’ being simpler to convey than ‘3,200MHz’.

Elsewhere, GHz is used to define the area of the radio spectrum used for wireless networking technologies, such as Bluetooth (2.4GHz) and Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz).

CD-RW drive speeds
With manufacturers persistently striving to outdo one another by coming up with ever-faster drives, the numbers used to signify the performance of CD-RW drives are a common cause for confusion.

CD-RW (as well as CD-Rom and CD-R) drive speeds are all based on the speed of the very first drives, which read data from discs at a leisurely 150Kb/s.

These ’single-speed’ drives soon became double-speed (300Kb/sec), then quad-speed, and at the moment the fastest drives are 52-speed (52 times faster than a single-speed drive, or 7,800Kb/sec).

When it comes to speeds for CD-R and CD-RW use, most manufacturers stick to the convention of read speed x write (CD-R) speed x rewrite (CD-RW) speed, such as 48 x 32 x 16.

DVD drive speeds
When it comes the performance of DVD reading and writing drives, the figures and conventions are much more complicated.

The key thing to keep in mind is that a single-speed DVD-Rom drive is much faster than a single-speed CD-Rom drive – 1,385Kb/sec, compared with 150Kb/sec. Most new DVD drives are 16-speed models, 16 times faster than a single speed drive, or 22,160Kb/sec.

Unfortunately, unlike the CD-RW drive market – and thanks to a number of competing recordable DVD standards – there isn’t, as yet, a single convention for the order in which the speed multiples are listed. In other words, you can’t deduce at a glance a drive’s read, write and rewrite potential.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that most recordable DVD drives can write to CD-RW and some newer models can even deal with more than one recordable DVD standard.

It’s not uncommon for fancier drives to list half-a-dozen or more speed statistics, relating to read/write/rewrite ability on the various recordable DVD formats, and again for CD media.

Hard disk speeds (rpm)
When used in relation to hard disk technology, the abbreviation rpm (revolutions per minute), signifies the spin speed of a drive’s data-storing magnetic platters.

Obviously, the higher the rpm, the faster the disk platters spin and this has an effect on the data transfer rate, i.e. how fast data can be read from and written to the disk.

A typical PC hard disk spins at 5,400rpm and, for most purposes, this is more than adequate. Faster 7,200rpm hard disks are available for a small price premium and these will give a small but noticeable performance increase.

Still faster 10,000rpm hard disks are also available but, for the moment at least, these cost a princely sum.

Printer speed (ppm)
Printer manufacturers describe the performance of their wares in pages per minute, or ppm for short.

In simple terms, this describes how many pages a printer can print in one minute: the higher the figure, the faster the printer. Actual printer performance seldom lives up to quoted performance but most printers won’t be far off.

Unfortunately, ppm is really only a useful measure of a printer’s performance for text printing. Add graphics to a page, for example, and print speed will drop, as printing graphics is more involved than printing text.

Move to printing photo-quality images on an inkjet printer and ppm ceases to be a useful measure of performance. Instead, photo print speeds are usually measured in minutes.

Whatever the printer though, manufacturers hardly ever factor in the time it takes for the first page to be printed: the time between you pressing ‘print’ in an application and the first page appearing from the printer.

This largely depends on the speed of the computer but, for complex documents, it can increase print times significantly.

Frames per second (fps)
In relation to games or video, frames per second (fps) refers to how often a graphics card updates the still images displayed on the monitor to give the impression of a moving image. The higher the fps (or ‘frame rate’, as it’s often called), the smoother on-screen motion will look.

The frame rate of a game is most dependant on the graphics card. The graphics card is responsible for calculating the new positions of any moving objects, as well as working out such things as which objects can’t be seen because they’re hidden behind another and even such things as shading based on ambient light conditions.

A game with just a few simple objects will run at a high frame rate on just about any graphics card. Switch to a complex 3D game that contains lots of highly detailed objects, however, and frame rates will plummet on all but the most powerful graphics cards.

One way to boost the frame rate in such instances is to drop the resolution of the game, since lower resolutions result in less complex objects, which means less work for the graphics card.

With video, fps is a measurement of how many still frames are displayed each second and, again, this largely depends on the power of the graphics card.

What constitutes an acceptable fps figure is highly subjective. Games running at below 15fps are usually unacceptably jerky, but anything above 30fps will seem smooth to all but the most demanding gamer.

QUALITY

Dots per inch (dpi)
The output quality of printers and the image capture ability of scanners are defined in terms of dots per inch (dpi) – a straightforward enough term, or so you’d think. In fact, dots per inch can be a wholly meaningless phrase.

That a particular printer can squeeze out so many dots of ink in a given inch is no indication of the quality of the output (the variety of ink and the size and separation of the ink droplets all contribute to the look of a printed page).

Similarly, many scanners capture far fewer dots per inch of image information than their quoted resolutions suggest. A scanner with a claimed 9,600dpi resolution, for instance, might capture just 600dpi of image information – this is the true ‘optical’ resolution.

The higher resolution figures are usually the result of interpolation, mathematical formulae that are applied to the captured data to increase the number of pixels in the final image.

Finally, dpi figures for printers and scanners are often referred to as ‘resolution’. As you’ll see from the definition of screen resolution below, monitors, printers and scanners all work with images composed of dots of colour called pixels, so there is some justification for using resolution for all three types of technology.

Screen resolution
A computer’s graphics card determines the level of detail with which images will be displayed on the attached monitor. The measurement for this detail is called ‘resolution’.

The pictures you see on screen are in fact made up of thousands (or even millions) of tiny coloured dots – picture elements or ‘pixels’ for short.

A graphics card that can output a resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 pixels, for example, will produce 1,920,000 pixels on the display – 1,600 across the screen and 1,200 down it.

It’s worth noting that the electron guns in traditional CRT monitors generate a spread of resolutions, while TFT monitors are more restrictive. TFT monitors are manufactured with fixed grids of picture elements, sometimes referred to as the display’s ‘native’ resolution.

A TFT monitor with a native resolution of 1,024 x 768 pixels will be unable to display images with resolutions in excess of this figure, even if the graphics card is capable of generating them at a higher resolution.

Moreover, while most TFTs can run below their native resolution, the displayed images may look distorted.

Point size
A ‘point’ (or ‘pt’) is measurement of the size of a particular font when printed. In modern publishing it amounts to precisely 1/72 of an inch – 0.0138in (or 0.35mm). Therefore, a line of text printed at a size of 12pt will occupy a space that is 4.2mm (12 x 0.35mm) high.

While individual characters will be shorter than this figure, the measurement includes the room occupied by the ascenders and descenders of characters, like ‘f’ and ‘p’.

For example, printed at point size 12, a lowercase ‘j’ – a character that exhibits both ascender and descender – will measure precisely 4.2mm in height.

Megapixel
The megapixel measurement is most often used in relation to digital cameras. It translates literally as ‘one million pixels’ and is a useful guide to a camera’s detail capture capability.

It’s safe to assume, for example, that a two-megapixel camera will snap more detailed photos than a one-megapixel model.

However, do bear in mind that resolution is just one of many factors that affect the overall appearance and quality of a digital photograph, the quality of the lens being the most significant.

You should also be aware that the resolution of the photos captured by a digital camera might well be at odds with the megapixel-multiple specification quoted by the camera manufacturer.

For instance, the maximum resolution of a so-called two-megapixel camera might actually be 1,600 x 1,200, which is some 80,000 pixels short of the two million mark.

This is because the sensors positioned on the extreme edges of the CCD, the electronic device that captures individual pixels, will probably be unusable.

There are various reasons for this. It could be that the borderline pixels are obscured by holding clasps or because the camera’s own lens design affords an insufficient passage for light to reach the CCD’s boundaries.

MISCELLANEOUS

Micron
A micron (mn) is one millionth of a metre but, if you’ve never heard of it, don’t worry – you don’t need to. In the computer world though, the micron is of prime importance to processor manufacturers, such as Intel and AMD, because it measures the scale on which they build their chips.

Intel, for example, has long been able to produce chips that contain components measuring just 0.13 microns across, although you’d need to be in possession of an exceptionally powerful microscope to confirm this.

Of course, the development of smaller components means the production of processors with more components crammed onto their silicon, which results in more powerful processors.

In fact, the micron is not long for the computer world. Intel recently announced the introduction of an even finer process technology that makes it possible for components smaller than 0.13mn to be produced.

Rather than fractionising a fraction, the firm has instead turned to the nanometre (nm) as its unit measurement, i.e. one billionth of a metre.

3.5in & 5.25in drives
Desktop computer cases generally include a number of free spaces for additional drives or devices. Known as ‘drive bays’, they come in two sizes: 3.5in and 5.25in.

This measurement is taken widthways – the height measurement is more or less redundant. Most PCs come with a hard disk, CD-Rom and/or a floppy drive fitted into some of these bays and any remaining vacant bays can be used for further drives or devices.

CD-Rom, CD-RW and DVD-Rom drives always fit into a 5.25in bay, hard disks fit into 3.5in ones.

IMEI is a number which is unique to every GSM mobile phone. It is usually found
printed on or underneath the phone’s battery and warranty card. IMEI of any set
can also be found by dialing the sequence *#06# into the phone. The IMEI number
is used by the GSM network to identify valid devices and therefore can be used to
stop a stolen phone from accessing the network. For example, if a mobile phone is
stolen, the owner can call his/her network provider and instruct them to “block” the

Mozilla pushes back Firefox deadlines

Mozilla won't make a 2009 deadline for releasing Firefox 3.6 and is giving itself more time to complete a major update, version 4.0.

The organization behind the open-source Web browser had predicted a final release of Firefox 3.6 in December 2009, but the Mozilla Web site now includes "ship Firefox 3.6" as a goal for the first quarter of 2010.

In addition, Firefox 4.0, which had been due in 2010, now is "aimed at late 2010 or early 2011," with a beta due in the summer of 2010, according to Mozilla.

Schedule delays are common in the software world, but browser development is furious these days with the arrival of Google's Chrome into the market, Apple helping to expand the frontiers of what the browser can do, Opera trying to dramatically speed up JavaScript execution and display performance, and Microsoft getting more ambitious again with Internet Explorer. "We've always been more quality-driven than time-driven, but we understand timing in the market matters to our users and our competitiveness," said Mike Shaver, Mozilla's vice president of engineering, in an October interview.

There's a lot on tap for Firefox, though. The big new feature in version 3.6 is incorporation of the Personas plug-in that lets people easily customize the browser's appearance, though behind the scenes there's also been work to speed up the browser's launch time, improve security, and make some other changes. Mozilla has release five beta versions so far but not the release candidate that signals that work is nearly done; Mozilla programmers are "done with all blockers," bugs or other problems that stand in the way of a release, according to Mozilla's Web site.

So what exactly is coming next for Firefox?

For version 3.7, Mozilla plans several changes. One goal is better performance, for example with a 25 percent reduction in start-up time on Windows. Another is incorporation of Jetpack (now up to version 0.7), an interface for plug-ins that are easier to write, install, and upgrade.

To get quick access to sites that have been bookmarked or previously visited, Firefox already lets people type text into the "awesome bar," formally but hardly ever actually called the smart location bar. Soon to arrive in test versions of Firefox will be a new ability called tab matching that lets people get access also to Web sites already open in other tabs.

Also in development is the first phase of work called Electrolysis to separate various computing processes into separate compartments for better stability. Firefox 3.7 should benefit from the first phase of Electrolysis, which moves plug-ins to a separate process from the main browser computing process.

That should help isolate problems with Adobe Systems' Flash plug-in, for example, that previously crashed the whole browser. However, the initial work only is for Windows and Linux, not Mac OS X.

Another likely addition will be Weave, a plug-in that synchronizes bookmarks, passwords, plug-ins, and open tabs across different instances of Firefox. Weave integration is scheduled for the first quarter of 2010.

For version 4.0, expect deeper changes in Electrolysis to split each browser tabs into a separate process, too. And version 4.0 should get significant user interface changes.

In earlier planning, Mozilla had expected to mimic some of Chrome's design, with tabs across the top of the browser and a location bar below and a menu bar replaced by some drop-down menu buttons that take up less room. Now, in a refresh of the Firefox 4.0 look, Mozilla designer Stephen Horlander introduced a new way to replace the menu bar, the Firefox app button.

In Mozilla's first attempt to replace the menu bar, "we were informed by how Safari and Chrome had handled this problem by paring down all menu items into two separate Page and Tools buttons. This approach has a few advantages but also some disadvantages. The new proposed approach to this problem is an App Button which is similar to the single menu approach taken by Windows 7 native applications (Paint, WordPad) and by MS Office," Horlander said in a blog post.

KARACHI: Squads from Afghanistan, Cameroon, India, Kenya, Mongolia, Uzbekistan and Vietnam landed here on Thursday for the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto International Boxing Championship being held here at the KPT Sports Complex Gymnasium from Jan 1 to 9.

Boxing teams from Yemen and Iraq are already in the city to participate in the event expected to feature around 20 teams from different countries.

Akram Khan, Secretary Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF), said squads from Bangladesh, China, Central Africa, Hungary, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Syria, Myanmar, Indonesia, Chinese Taipei and Thailand were expected to reach here Thursday night or would arrive on Friday.

According to the PBF, around 115 pugilists would be participating in the competition.

India sent its first sports team to Pakistan in more than a year on Thursday as a seven-member boxing team flew into Karachi to compete in an international tournament.

The boxers are the first Indian sports team to cross the border since India stalled sporting links with Pakistan after the November 2008 attacks on Mumbai.

Head coach of the Indian boxing squad, Shiv Singh, said the boxers were happy to tour Pakistan.

“We have been cleared by the government to take part in the event and all the members of the squad are very happy to be here [in Pakistan],” Singh told reporters after reaching Quaid-i-Azam International Airport here.

Mohammad Ali Shah, the Sindh Sports Minister, has promised foolproof security arrangements for the international event in the wake of a suicide attack that killed 43 people in the city on Monday.

Three Indian boxers – Sanjay Singh, Naresh Singh and Parnoj Singh – will compete in the international competition, expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Shiv said both India and Pakistan are doing well at an international level and need to compete against each other.

“Pakistan and India must compete against each other, more so that they can improve and win more laurels at the international level,” he said. “We have come here with good preparations and want to win.”

Shiv shrugged off security concerns, saying he has faith in the organisers. “We have no security concerns, the focus is on boxing and the rest is in the hands of our hosts.”—Agencies

Moreover, technical delegate Nieva Embuldeniya approved four local referee judges who are Olympian referee judges – Ghulam Hussain Patni, international Arshad Qureshi, international Mohammad Aslam and international S.M. Sharif.

LAKI MARWAT: Pakistan Volleyball Game Blast, 70 killed, At least 70 persons were killed and scores of others suffered injuries as a suicide bomber riding a car detonated explosives in a football ground in Shah Hassan Khel area of Lakki Marwat. Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has strongly condemned the attack and ordered investigations into the incident,.
According to eyewitnesses, locals of the area were playing volleyball as a suicide attacker rammed explosives laden car into the wall of the ground. Rescue teams rushed to the blast site and started rescue activities. The injured have been shifted to District Headquarter Hospital Lakki Marwat where emergency has been imposed. Hospital officials told that some of the injured were in critical condition and might have to be shifted to hospitals in Peshawar. Security forces cordoned off the area after the incident.
According to local sources, the ‘Qaumi Lashkar’ active against Taliban in Shah Hassan Khel was the target of the suicide attack. The bomber targeted the ground adjacent to the house of Malik Mushtaq – member of peace committee.
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said terrorists can’t weaken nation’s resolve to eradicate terrorism by cowardly acts. He directed the NWFP government to heed treatment of the injured in the blast.

Suicide Attack in Lakki Marwat, 40 killed

LAKKI MARWAT, Pakistan News: At least 40 people have been killed and another 80 wounded in a suicide attack here Friday evening.

According to preliminary reports, a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into the outer wall of a playground in Shah Hassan Khail area when scores of people were gathered there to watch a volleyball match between two local teams.

At least 27 deaths have so far been confirmed in the attack while more than 80 injured have been rushed to District Hospital and other nearby medical facilities.

Police, other law enforcement agencies’ personnel and paramedics arrived at the scene soon after the attack and carried out emergency relief activities. The area has been cordoned off, it was reported.

Police said Friday’s bombing in Lakki Marwat city, not far from South Waziristan, was possible retaliation for local residents’ efforts to keep militants out of the area.

“The locality has been a hub of militants. Locals set up a militia and expelled the militants from this area. This attack seems to be reaction to their expulsion,” local police chief Ayub Khan told reporters.

He said the bomber drove onto the field, which lies in a congested neighborhood, during the volleyball contest. Some nearby houses collapsed, and “we fear that some 10 or so people might have been trapped in the rubble,” Khan said.

Should the uniform for colleges, schools remain mandatory?

Sindh Education Department recently decided that there would be no restriction on uniforms in schools and colleges of the province, while ajrak could be made an optional part of school uniform, if desired so by the education institutes.

The decision if implemented, while opposed by the city council, will surely create a class difference among the students. A uniform is a symbol of social unity and discipline in institutions ending discrimination on the basis of students’ status. ‘Ek hi saf main kharay ho gay Mehmood o Ayaz’ will lose its real meaning.

In Pakistani society, where majority of people belong to middle class, it is hard to make both ends meet due to inflation for many families. Uniform is a kind of protection for them to hide their status (not because they are ashamed of it) in an educational institute, so that they can’t be disheartened or become the victim of taunt by their companions (as it is a common practice in colleges). The restriction will create a psychological status shock for many and also give rise to inferiority complex. Influence of modernism can be sky high. Students can’t be distinguished at public places or even in their college making bunking even easier for them.

One can’t understand the logic behind this decision and how helpful it could be to raise educational standards. Perhaps the educational department could explain it well. Our Educational system needs an overhaul not the uniforms. Uniforms should be mandatory and retained for colleges and schools.

KARACHI: Pak Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC) has scaled up its car prices (excluding Liana) by Rs10,000-25,000.

According to an auto analyst, this surge is in response to rising cost pressures amid appreciation of foreign currencies against the rupee. US dollar and Japanese yen have appreciated by 3.4 per cent and 8.3 per cent respectively since July 1, 2009. This rise in car prices will be effective from January 1, 2010.

It is important to mention that PSMC had already increased prices two months ago by Rs5,000-15,000 which was effective from November 1, 2009. Mehran VX new price is Rs419,000 with an increase of Rs15,000; VXR Rs470,000 with Rs16,000; VX CNG new price Rs464,000 with Rs9,000 and VXR CNG new price Rs514,000 with Rs10,000.

Cultus VXR is now priced at Rs790,000, with increase of Rs25,000; VXR CNG Rs830,000 with Rs25,000; VXL Rs850,000 with Rs25,000; VXL CNG Rs897,000 with Rs25,000.

Alto VXR new price is Rs613,000 up by Rs15,000, followed by VXR CNG with Rs662,000 up by Rs15,000. Ravi VX new price goes up Rs439,000 with an increase of Rs10,000 and CNG Rs489,00 with Rs10,000.

BolanVX price touches Rs497,000 with an increase of Rs10,000; VXR Rs557,000 up by Rs18,000; VX CNG Rs549,000 with Rs2,000 and VXR CNG stands at Rs609,000 up by Rs10,000. Rs5,000 extra will be charged additionally for the metallic colour.

Businessmen demand ban on yarn export

LAHORE: The business community of Kasur has demanded of the government to impose a ban on yarn export as it would not only render thousands of workers jobless but would also cause closure of factories.

The businessmen were talking to Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry during his visit to Kasur on Wednesday. Former LCCI president Mian Shafqat Ali and former vice president Shahzad Ali Malik were also present in the meeting.

They said at a time when developed economies of the world were concentrating on value-addition to earn foreign exchange, the government was doing the other way round by allowing export of yarn. They said recent export of yarn to China had jacked up the commodity’s prices by 30 to 40 per cent and due to this increase the weaving industry was facing a crisis-like situation which could result in total closure of the yarn sector.

Speaking on the occasion, Convener of LCCI Standing Committee on Kasur Hafiz Mohammad Munir and Co-convener Chaudhry Zahid Hussain sought the help of LCCI president to get the government to withdraw the proposed 13.6 per cent hike in electricity prices.

They said shortage of electricity and gas was already hitting the entire business community hard and the increase in power prices would be like adding fuel to fire; therefore the government should review its decision in the larger interest of the country.

In his address, Zafar Iqbal said the LCCI would take up the issue of yarn export with the commerce minister for the sake of local industry.

He said it was time for the government to give some incentive to the businessmen who were doing business in such difficult conditions, but unfortunately the policies being evolved by the government were not business-friendly and the government should take the stakeholders into confidence on this matter.

MELBOURNE: Mohammad Yousuf has issued a stark warning to Pakistan cricket of the impending dangers of too much Twenty20 cricket, insisting that it is “necessary” that Pakistan plays as little of the format as possible.

Otherwise, the Pakistan captain believes, the format will “finish Pakistan’s cricket.”

Yousuf’s counsel comes in the wake of Pakistan’s defeat to Australia in the first Test in Melbourne, where their batsmen struggled on a placid pitch in a 170-run loss. Australia declared twice in the Test, but Pakistan were bowled out for 258 and 251 – the second after being 170-3. But his words come in a broader context: those totals continued a long run of sub-par performances by the batsmen in the Test arena; in 14 Test innings now, they have crossed 350 only twice.

They have struggled with their openers and their No.3 batsmen, and have been caught in a number of Test collapses through the year in Sri Lanka, New Zealand and now Australia. As in Melbourne, a number of batsmen have settled in, before getting themselves out. The failure, Yousuf believes, comes from Twenty20 cricket.”It used to happen before but now because of Twenty20 cricket no player knows how to stay at the wicket anymore,” Yousuf told Cricinfo. “Batsmen are finding it very difficult. I know the format has money, players get it and boards do but if Pakistan hypes up Twenty20 too much, Test and ODI cricket will really go down.”

Pakistan are the reigning world champions in the format, having won the World Twenty20 in a stirring display in June in England. They reached the final of the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007 and have the best win-loss ratio of all nations in the format. In Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq they have, arguably, the format’s sharpest game-changers.

They were also one of the first countries to adopt the format domestically, holding wildly successful events in Lahore and Karachi in 2005 and 2006, and the first three years of the tournament attracted what many believed to be the largest domestic crowds ever in Pakistan. Additionally, a number of their players had successful first seasons with the IPL; they weren’t allowed to participate in tournament’s second edition, but a number of them are very keen to be involved next season and over 12 players have applied for a place in the auction. Afridi, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Gul and Sohail Tanvir have all played, or are playing Twenty20 cricket, for Australian state sides as well.

Most Pakistanis are brought up on a diet of 20-over cricket at club and street level. That, Yousuf believes, has left much of the current crop unsuited to the longer, unique demands of Test cricket and even ODI cricket. “Both in Tests and ODIs we have problems,” Yousuf said. “We struggle to bat 50 overs. Against New Zealand we couldn’t make 212 in 50 overs. Everyone played shots and got out.”Twenty is easy for Pakistanis because they know how to hit, nobody knows how to defend. Until players do not play with discipline and play ball to ball and leave balls they are supposed to we will struggle in ODIs, let alone Tests. If you see a ball, hit it because you have to score. But if you are going to slog all the time what is the point?

I could have hit jumping out but unless you get a ball to hit what is the point? That is the point of Test cricket. It is necessary that Pakistanis, the media, the board, the fans realise that we play as little Twenty20 as possible.

“One domestic tournament is enough and a World Cup apart from that, but my belief is that you have to reduce Twenty20 heavily. They shouldn’t play it in club cricket – even there you play 20 overs, not 40-over matches. I only have 2-3 years left in my career but I worry Twenty20 will finish Pakistan’s cricket.”"You look at England, South Africa and Australia. They give Test cricket and ODIs the attention they deserve,” Yousuf said. “Until we do the same, we will not progress. They also play Twenty20 but they do it in a controlled way. In our country we only want to play Twenty20 and no Tests. I think we have given up on Test cricket: either we look for the money or we look to revive Pakistan cricket.”

Historic NFC Award Inked

GWADAR, Pakistan News: The Chief Ministers of four provinces on Wednesday signed the historic 7th National Finance Commission Award.

The ceremony at the picturesque Gwadar, in Balochistan province, was witnessed by Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and members of his cabinet.

The venue was specially chosen to reflect the desire of all the provinces to end years of deprivation of the largest province of the country.

The Award was inked by the finance ministers of the four provinces in the presence of Punjab Chief Minster Shahbaz Sharif, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti and Balochistan Chief Minister Aslam Raisani and Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin.

The new Award would come into effect from the next financial year and marks the agreement by all the federating units over the distribution of financial resources among the provinces of Pakistan by the federal government on annual basis.

Under the award the population will be given 82 percent weightage, poverty 10.3 percent, revenue collection 5 percent (2.5 percent revenue generation, 2.5 percent revenue collection) and area 2.7 percent.

Under the new NFC Award, the federation met the demand of the provincial government for a greater share in the national resources.

The provincial share of the divisible pool would increase from 47.5 percent to 56 percent in the first year of NFC and 57.5 percent in the remaining years of the Award.

Under the new formula, Punjab would get 51.74 percent from the divisible pool, Sindh 24.55 percent, NWFP 14.62 percent and Balochistan 9.09 percent.

In the new award Punjab has given up 1.27 percent, Sindh 0.39 percent and NWFP 0.26 percent, while Balochistan has gained.

DURBAN: Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad bowled South Africa out for just 133 as England completed victory by an innings and 98 runs on the fifth day of the second Test at Kingsmead on Wednesday.

The pair of Nottinghamshire bowlers took nine wickets between them as South Africa, who began the day on 76 for six, were all out for 133 after 18 overs on the final day.

Swann claimed five for 54 and Broad took four for 43 to help England take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

“It’s not far off the best performance I’ve seen by an England team,” said England captain Andrew Strauss, “but I’m aware the series is very much alive and there is still hard work to be done.”

South African captain Graeme Smith admitted his side had been outplayed.

“We’ve got to look at ourselves in the mirror and bounce back very quickly,” he said.

The third Test starts in Cape Town on Sunday.

Off-spinner Swann had match figures of nine for 164 and earned his second successive man of the match award following a five-wicket haul and an innings of 85 in the drawn first Test in Centurion.

South Africa’s faint hopes of extending the match beyond lunch evaporated when Morne Morkel was out to the 11th ball of the morning.

Morkel was dropped by Strauss off the previous delivery from Swann, which the left-hander edged low to the England captain’s right hand, with the ball going on for four.

But Swann pushed the next ball through quicker and Morkel, stuck in his crease, was trapped leg before wicket.

Mark Boucher went on to make 29 before he gloved Stuart Broad down the leg side to fellow wicketkeeper Matt Prior.

He was given not out by umpire Amish Saheba but England asked for a review and replays showed clearly the ball had deviated off his glove so Boucher had to depart for the second time in the match after initially being given not out.

Paul Harris hit 36 before he scooped James Anderson to Broad at mid-on and Swann completed a comprehensive win when he had Dale Steyn leg before wicket.

Pakistan: Visa and immigration

Who requires a visa?
Required by all except the following:
(a) holders of a Pakistan Origin Card (POC) regardless of nationality for unlimited stay;
(b) nationals of Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago for an unlimited period;
(c) nationals of Iceland, Maldives and Zambia for visits of up to a maximum of 3 months;
(d) nationals of Nepal and Samoa, and holders of Chinese passports issued in Hong Kong, for visits of up to 30 days;
(e) transit passengers continuing their journey within 24 hours by the same or first connecting aircraft, provided they are holding onward or return documentation and not leaving the airport;
(f) holders of UN Laissez-passer.

Note: Visitors whose stay in Pakistan exceeds 30 days must report to the nearest Foreigners Registration Office for registration.
Note: Travellers are currently advised against travel to Pakistan until further notice unless there are compelling reasons to do so. Travel to the North West Frontier Province, Baluchistan and the Northern Areas are particularly ill advised.

Restricted entry and transit: The Government of Pakistan refuses entry to nationals of Israel, even for transit. Nationals of Afghanistan are refused entry if their passports or tickets show evidence of transit or boarding in India.

What documents will be required?
Passport valid for 6 months beyond the intended length of stay required by all.

Application to: Consulate (or Consular section at Embassy or High Commission); see Contact Addresses section.

Application requirements: (a) Original valid passport, plus one photocopy. (b) One application form. (c) Two passport-size photos. (d) Confirmed return/onward ticket. (e) Proof of sufficient funds for duration of stay. (f) Fee payable by cash or postal order only. (g) For business trips, a letter of invitation from a company in Pakistan.

Time required to issue visa:
Depends on nationality (in UK, visas are normally granted within 24-48 hours). Enquire at the nearest Consulate or Embassy. Pilgrim visas require 2 months processing time.\

What is the cost of a visa?
Price of visa varies according to nationality. For UK nationals, prices are: Single-entry (£45); Double-entry (£60); Multiple-entry (£81). These prices are identical to those issued for the Visa for Media Professionals, which must be routed through the Information Division of the Pakistan High Commission. For Pakistanis holding dual nationality, prices are: Adult: (£24) Child (up to 18 years old): £12; valid for stays of up to 1 year. Applicants with parents holding Pakistani passports get the same concession, provided they produce the original detailed birth certificate and their parents’ Pakistani passports. Pilgrim (Single-entry): £45. This is issued to those wishing to visit holy places (Shrines/Gurdawaras) in Pakistan and is allowed for groups of pilgrims, normally restricted to a specified period. Business: £68 (Single-entry); £90 (Double-entry); £122 (Multiple-entry). Certain nationals are issued visas free of charge, but they must be obtained prior to travel. For further information, consult the High Commission or Embassy.

How long is the visa valid for?
6 months from the date of issue for stays of up to 3 months. A multiple-entry visa allows six journeys in a total period not exceeding 1 year, with a maximum 3-month stay at any one time.

Other information:
1: Yellow fever vaccination certificate is required of all travellers arriving within 6 days from any part of a country in which yellow fever is endemic. Infants under 6 months of age are exempt if the mother’s vaccination certificate shows her to have been vaccinated prior to the child’s birth. Countries and areas within the endemic zone are regarded as infected.

2: Following WHO guidelines issued in 1973, a cholera vaccination certificate is no longer a condition of entry to Pakistan. However, cholera is a serious risk in this country and precautions are essential. Up-to-date advice should be sought before deciding whether these precautions should include vaccination, as medical opinion is divided over its effectiveness. See the Health appendix.

3: Vaccination against typhoid is advised.

4: Malaria risk exists throughout the year in all areas below 2000m (6560ft). The malignant falciparum strain is present and has been reported as chlorine-resistant.

Food & drink: All water should be regarded as being potentially contaminated. Water used for drinking, brushing teeth or making ice should have first been boiled or otherwise sterilised. Milk is non-pasteurised and should be boiled. Powdered or tinned milk is available and is advised, but make sure that it is reconstituted with pure water. Avoid dairy products that are likely to have been made from non-pasteurised milk. Only eat well cooked meat and fish, preferably served hot. Salad and mayonnaise may carry increased risk. Vegetables should be cooked and fruit peeled.

Other risks: Hepatitis A and E occur and hepatitis B is endemic. Trachoma and typhoid fever are common. Between June and January, Japanese encephalitis is a risk in rural areas. Dengue fever may also occur.
Rabies is present. For those at high risk, vaccination before arrival should be considered. If you are bitten, seek medical advice without delay. For more information, consult the Health appendix.

Health care: Medical facilities can be very limited. There is no reciprocal health agreement with the UK. Travellers are strongly advised to take out full medical insurance before departure.

Note: A certificate proving the visitor to be HIV-negative is required if planning on staying over 1 year in the country.

Study Visa For AUSTRALIA

VISA PROCEDURE & GUIDE:

Student numbers from Pakistan is increasing, who are willing to go to study in australia.The increasing demand has meant that, as a general rule, applications are assessed without interview. Students are strongly urged to thoroughly prepare your application and submit all required documents. Insufficient supporting material will delay the process and may lead to refusal of the application.

If you want to immigrate to Australia, there are a few different ways to apply. You will need to decide which immigration program will work best for you and your family.
In the last fifteen years, Immigration to Australia has been very popular among the new generations as well as old people. Australia is a very beautiful & very peaceful country. It is multicultural in nature and have a lot of opportunities for the young people.

General Skilled Migration

General Skilled migration is the best option the for skilled people. It allows them to live and work in Australia. We all know that Europe and Australia has a shortage of skilled workers especially low cost workers. that is the reason the Australian Government wants to give permanent residence to international workers.
The General Skilled Migration (GSM) program is for people who are not sponsored by an employer of Australia and who have skills in occupations that Australia needs to fill labor shortages. Best age for applying is is between 18 to 45 years. The applicant must have good English abilities. The must have good IELTS score and also have recent skilled work experience. The IELTS score should be at least 7 bands in all four categories. Your nominated occupation must be on SOL( Skilled Occupation List) of Australian Govenment.

Investors, Businessmen, entrepreneurs and self-employed persons Entrepreneurs

To qualify as an entrepreneur, you must have at least two years of business experience and a net worth of at least A$300,000 that was obtained legally. You must also obtain a minimum of 35 points in a selection grid designed to determine whether you will be able to become economically established in Australia.

You must also make a commitment to own and operate a business in Australia that will contribute to the economy and create jobs. After you become a permanent resident in Australia, you will have three years to meet the conditions of the Entrepreneur Class.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

Obtain a Letter from the Australian university / college - to study full time
Prepare financial documents that indicate that you have the capacity to meet the cost of tuition and living expenses in Australia, cost of airfares, travel. Your financial supporters can only be yourself, your spouse, your parents or your grand parents
Certified, attested copies of academic certificates, including IELTS test results
Required photographs (4) and your passport
Completed visa application available from the Australian High Commission, Diplomatic
Enclave, Islamabad, Pakistan between the hours 09:00 - 12:00, Monday thru Thursday
Submit photocopies of all documents PLUS have originals if required to be submitted or shown at the time of filing an application. The originals will be returned to you
Required visa fee, made payable in favour of Australian High Commission, Islamabad, via bank draft, drawn in Islamabad
Medical Examination:
Once your application is assessed and decided you will receive a pre-visa approval (PVA) letter with your medical examination instructions and places to go for medical examination
Pay Tuition Fees:
You may now pay your tuition fees and medical insurance premium (OSHC) to the
institution in Australia.
The institution in Australia will send you an official “Confirmation of Enrolment” - the Australian High Commission, in Islamabad accepts faxed copies of this confirmation DIRECT to them from the Australian institution. This confirmation is required before any visa can be finalised.

BEST TIME TO APPLY:

Visa processing times can vary. The best time for student visa applications are December and June of each year and you should allow 6-8 weeks, but much also depends on you. If your application is in order and you have no problems with your medical check-up, transfer the fees quickly to your school in Australia. Take into account any extra time required for you to attend orientation or travel to Australia. You may need to lodge your application well in advance during peak times.

You must study full time and attend at least 95% of your classes. Failure to attend classes or abide by your visa conditions may result in visa cancellation.

You can work up to 20 hours per week. The money you earn from this part time work is not sufficient to support you financially in Australia but is a great way to get work experience and use your English.

Your visa will be issued for the length of your study in Australia. You can apply to extend your visa in Australia should you choose to further your studies.
